Thing #13: Mmmmm… tagging

Unlucky Thing #13!   Oooh, spoooky and eeeerie!  OK, actually del.icio.us isn’t spooky or eerie at all.  I’ve played around with del.icio.us myself but it didn’t stick because I’ve never been much of a bookmarkish person.  Because I’m used to going from computer to computer, I’ve never gotten in the habit of saving pages.   Generally, I’ll add quick links in the browser to the five or so pages I use most often, but otherwise I rely on my memory and Google to go back to pages I liked.  However, I understand hugelythe appeal of del.icio.us.  It really is a tool that has “Reference Desk” written all over it.

At the reference desk in Lakewood, I know we have tons of links bookmarked and that it’s a big job to make sure all the computers have the same links saved on them.  Obviously, del.icio.us would make that job a lot easier.  Sure, it would be a big project at the outset, but in the end, it would be much more sustainable and easier to use.  Also, rather than having each branch make their own, OCL could make one master reference account with tags for branch-specific information.

I’m also loving the social aspect of being able to see other people’s links, not only to find good sites to use, but also to get ideas for how to use the site.  Stafford’s summer book list is incredible and has me thinking that a great use for del.icio.us would be making a pathfinder for ubran lit, a rapidly growing area of interest for patrons in Lakewood.

Personally, I can see how del.icio.us would make a great notebook, almost, of things I come across online.  I really need to think about starting an account and sticking with it, as I’m sure I can’t keep relying on memory for the rest of my life!  I could use del.icio.us to start looking up and saving information about fun games to play on that Wii I’m going to win…
