It occurred to me I talked about how great del.icio.us is but forgot to mention that tagging itself is pretty darn awesome. I am someone who doesn’t choose what books to read based on subject matter so traditional taxonomies don’t really work that well for me. Two of my favorite books — “King Leopold’s Ghost” and “Chesapeake Blue” — have absolutely nothing in common when it comes to traditional subject headings. One is non-fiction about the rubber trade in colonial Congo, the other a romance novel about ship building. But I loved them both because they were well written and had compelling characters (if you can call the people in non-fiction “characters”). The qualities they shared, the qualities that drew me to reading them, can be expressed in a folksonomy, but not a taxonomy. I don’t think tagging should be the only process for describing books in a catalog, but I think it’s a great companion to traditional subject headings.

Olenska, this is extraordinary! I so want LAK to do this, but I’ve been too lazy to get it off the ground.
