Thing #3: An Introductory Walk Through Flickr

Chelsea Physic Garden
Originally uploaded by Diane,

Thing #3 brings us to Filckr, one of the most ridiculously fun sites on all the interwebs. Who doesn’t love looking at beautiful photographs? Who doesn’t love showing off their own beautiful photographs? And most importantly, who doesn’t hate dealing with photos attached in email?

I found the photo on the right by searching the tags for “Chelsea Phsyic Garden” (which is a little slice of heaven dropped down in the middle of London).  There were prettier pictures of plants and more interesting compositions, but I loved that this picture captured the serenity of an urban garden.  Also, I’m dying of Spring Fever and this shot just made me want to walk right into the picture and plunk down on the grass with a book and a picnic blanket.

I created this post by using Flickr’s blogging tool which was insanely — almost criminally — easy to use.  Just tell Flickr your blogging login and password and away you go!

I’ve been using Flickr for a while now because I much prefer to send links to my photos in emails to friends than send attachments.  However, my original Flickr account is the first (and I sincerely hope only) free web account that I’ve forgotten the password for.  Hm.  Troubling.

Anyway, where was I?  Oh yes, Flickr is awesome.  Tagging seems to be a perfect compliment to how personal and creative people can be about their photographs.  Photographs can be so abstract — mine are always about memories more than art or subject matter — and tagging gives me a no-rules avenue for cataloging them.  I’ve also been amazed at what stunningly beautiful photographs I find every time I search Flickr just for fun.  A quick tag search for “vegetable garden” has inspired me to try to take more interesting photos of my veggie garden this Spring, Summer and Winter.

Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how excited I am to someday soon take a picture of me and my Wii.

(UPDATE: It looks like the template going from Flickr to here cut off the citation for the photographer of this lovely photograph. )
